The Durham Museum is proud to offer a variety of fun and educational Journey Programs for both Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts.
Girl Scout Journey Workshops
Earn some big points with your Troop with this action-packed class. Troops will join museum staff on a scavenger hunt through the permanent galleries. Scouts will then learn a couple of old games made new again by adding a fun twist.
Your five senses are completely independent of each other, yet they all work together to help you experience the world in which you live. In this class, Troops will explore their sense of sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing through several engaging activities. This class fits nicely with the exhibit Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear, created by The California Science Center; which will run until January 5, 2014.
My Family Story
Just like every snowflake is different, no two families are alike. In this workshop, scouts will learn about the things that make your family truly original. Brownies will learn about and design a family crest and create their own family tree.
This program is sure to have your Troop singing your praises as they learn about the world of music. Scouts will make a simple instrument, in addition to exploring different genres of music, such as jazz, pop, and folk. They’ll also learn how different music affects our moods through its rhythm and tempo.
Did you know that televisions, trampolines, ear muffs, and popsicles were all invented by children? Every great idea had to come from someone, no matter their age. Step into The Durham’s Research Lab as we work on the next big thing.
So are you a whorl, loop or arch? All three of these are types of finger prints and learning how to read them is one of the many skills a detective must have. In this class, Juniors will learn a few tricks of the trade the pros use to help solve a mystery of their own.
Special Holiday Workshop
During Christmas at Union Station, The Durham will offer a special holiday workshop. Scouts will have a guided tour covering the history of Christmas at Union Station, the Ethnic Trees, and the many different holiday traditions from around the world. They will even make a holiday craft to take home. This class is 2 hours in length and will be held Saturday, December 7; with both a morning and afternoon class available.
Morning session: 10:00-12:00 Afternoon Session 1:30-3:30
