What it Takes to Take Girls Outdoors

Experiencing the outdoors is a big part of Girl Scouting and an adventure that girls will remember forever! Spirit of Nebraska offers a series of outdoor learning experiences that prepare leaders with essential skills to take girls to any outdoor camp setting and incorporates the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Series of Outdoor Learning

Explore Out

Completing Explore Out will give you essential information to safely take girls outside of their typical troop meeting place by teaching you the value of outdoor adventures, the progression of outdoor activities, signs and indicators for girl readiness, how to use Safety Activity Checkpoints and valuable safety guidelines for specific situations, and helping you become familiar with the appropriate forms and paperwork related to outdoor activities.
  • Must be completed before traveling away from the typical troop/group meeting location.
  • Required before attending Camp Out (Basic)
  • To renew, complete again before the end of 5 years.
There is no cost, but does require you to download and print the Explore Out Guide and complete Explore Out online quizzes. It will take you approximately 45 minutes to complete.

Camp Out (Basic)

  • REQUIRED. Must be completed before taking girls on a camp out adventure that includes fire buildings and/or outdoor cooking.
  • Explore Out is a pre-requirement.
  • To renew, complete again before the end of 5 years.

Camp Out (Basic)
Want to take girls on an outdoor camp experience that includes fire building and/or outdoor cooking? You must complete Explore Out and attend a Camp Out (Basic) learning session.
In conjunction with the completion of Explore Out (which is a pre-requirement), Camp Out (Basic) learning sessions will prepare you to safely take girls to a camp setting. Topics covered include “leave no trace” principles, girl-led experiences, fire building, and outdoor cooking.

This learning session costs $15/participant and payment must be received in order to finalize registration.View our current Learning Schedule to find upcoming Camp Out (Basic) sessions.

Please note: Volunteers who completed our former outdoor learning sessions Sleep Out Camp Out or Lodge Out Camp Out are certified in outdoor learning for five years. These volunteers wishing to renew their outdoor learning certification should then complete Camp Out (Basic) before the end of the five years.

Camp Out (Plus)
In the near future, be sure to look for our webinars that will be available 24/7 to address topics such as: tenting, knot tying, hiking, and outdoor evening activities.
These will be available on our Spirit of Nebraska website and will focus on additional Camp Out skills that are needed to enhance your outdoor camping experiences.
