Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska is committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all girls. Girl Scouts is a place where every girl—regardless of her background or circumstances—can feel safe, valued, and empowered to be her best self.
In light of recent events and the growing concerns surrounding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, we recognize the importance of standing with and supporting Girl Scouts who may be affected.
As an organization rooted in inclusivity and compassion, we want to ensure that every girl feels safe, heard, and supported. We aim to offer guidance on navigating difficult conversations with empathy and providing valuable resources for girls who may be feeling afraid or uncertain.
If the topic of immigration enforcement comes up in conversation—whether among Girl Scouts or with their families—it’s important to approach it with care, empathy, and understanding. Here are a few tips for navigating these discussions thoughtfully:
Listen First
If a Girl Scout or her family shares concerns or fears, start by listening with care and compassion. Give them space to express their thoughts and feelings before offering guidance or resources. Sometimes, simply knowing someone is there to listen can be incredibly powerful.
Validate Their Feelings
Recognize and validate the emotions they may be experiencing. Saying something like, 'I can understand how challenging this feels for you' can help show empathy without diminishing their experience. A simple reminder, such as 'I know things are tough right now, but you’re not alone—we’re here to support you,' can make a meaningful difference.
Keep the Conversation Safe and Confidential
Reassure girls and their families that they are in a safe and supportive space, and that their conversations with you will be handled with care and respect.
Avoid Offering Legal Advice
While it may be tempting to offer advice, it’s important to leave legal guidance to the experts. Instead, encourage families to seek support from trusted professionals, such as immigration lawyers or reputable organizations that can provide the help they need.
Be Present
Sometimes, just being present and offering emotional support is the most meaningful thing you can do. Let them know that their well-being is important to you and the Girl Scouts community.
