Sometimes, a Girl Scout adventure doesn’t have to be extraordinary to become unforgettable.
For Audrey, it was three Brownies, a hotel in Kearney, an indoor waterpark, pizza, and a night spent swimming and laughing together.
Growing up in Denton, Nebraska, Audrey was part of a tiny Girl Scout troop of just four or five girls. In a small town where there wasn’t always a lot to do, Girl Scouts gave them something to look forward to and opportunities they might not have experienced otherwise.
One year, the girls sold cookies around town to raise enough money for a field trip. Their hard work paid off, and three of them traveled to Kearney for a night at a hotel.
Audrey had never stayed in a hotel with an indoor waterpark before. She remembers being fascinated by the little bridge over the pool and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. The girls swam their hearts out, ate pizza, laughed, and made a memory that has lasted a lifetime.
And one of those Brownies? She’s still Audrey’s best friend today.
That little trip represents so much of what Audrey loves about Girl Scouts: creating access to experiences, adventures, confidence, and friendships that girls may not otherwise have.
Today, Audrey serves as the Chief Development Officer for Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska, overseeing fund development and marketing. In many ways, her work has brought her right back to that little Brownie in Denton—not simply remembering what Girl Scouts made possible for her but helping make those opportunities possible for girls across Nebraska.
Because sometimes, a hotel room and an indoor pool are more than a fun night away. Sometimes, they become a lifelong friendship. Sometimes, they become a story you carry with you forever.
And sometimes, they become the reason you dedicate your career to making sure the next generation of girls gets to experience it, too.
100 years. Countless stories. One lasting legacy.
