Sometimes, one year is all it takes to make a lasting impression.
Shannon was a Brownie Girl Scout for just one year, growing up in a small, rural Nebraska community. Her troop leader was the mom of one of her good friends, and even though she had never been a troop leader before, she decided to start a troop for the girls anyway.
Shannon still remembers the adventures they shared.
There was the camping trip where the girls stayed in a tent until a big storm rolled in and water started seeping into their sleeping space! They packed everything up and headed home, but Shannon remembers having so much fun being outdoors with her friends. She also remembers sitting around a campfire at her leader’s farm, making s’mores, and enjoying time together.
And then there were the cookies.
Shannon was naturally shy, so going door-to-door selling Girl Scout Cookies pushed her outside of her comfort zone. Knocking on a stranger’s door and starting a conversation might seem like a small thing, but for Shannon, it was a moment of confidence she was proud to discover in herself.
She may not remember earning many patches, but she remembers how Girl Scouts made her feel—and those memories stayed with her.
Today, Shannon has the privilege of working for Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska. Coming back to Girl Scouts as an adult has given her a new appreciation for that first troop leader who simply saw an opportunity to create something meaningful for a group of girls and decided to make it happen.
Now, Shannon gets to help create those opportunities for girls across Nebraska.
Because sometimes, Girl Scouts isn't about how many years you're a member or how many patches you earn. Sometimes, it's about one brave knock on a door, one night around a campfire, or one adult who says, “I'll start a troop.”
And sometimes, those moments stay with you for a lifetime.
100 years. Countless stories. One lasting legacy.
