“My mother was a true mentor. She challenged us. She listened to us. She taught us. She gave us the confidence to become more than we thought we could become.”
Those are the words of Pat Meyer’s daughter, Cindy, reflecting on a woman who gave more than 40 years to Girl Scouts.
Girl Scouts was a family tradition for Pat. Her own mother was her Girl Scout leader, and Pat went on to become a leader herself; first for her daughter and then for countless girls who went on to earn their Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.
Pat was determined that her daughter and her daughter’s best friend, Judy, would become the first girls in the council to receive their Gold Awards. They did.
Over the years, Pat helped girls experience Girl Scouting far beyond their own communities. She took troops to Girl Scout World Centers in Switzerland, Mexico, and London; with girls raising the money themselves through funnel cakes, newspaper recycling, bake sales, car washes, and plenty of hard work.
She also served on numerous committees and executive boards and received the Thanks I and Thanks II Awards for her dedication to Girl Scouts.
But Pat’s legacy didn’t end when she passed away in 2014.
Her family established the Pat Meyer Girl Scout of Distinction Award, providing a scholarship to outstanding Gold Award recipients that includes a Lifetime Girl Scout membership, plaque, and $500. For 11 years, the award has helped recognize girls who demonstrate exceptional ingenuity and leadership through their Gold Award journeys.
53 scholarships have been awarded through the Pat Meyer Girl Scout of Distinction Award.
That is legacy.
A grandmother who led her daughter. A mother who mentored her daughter and generations of Girl Scouts. A family who chose to keep her belief in girls moving forward.
More than 40 years of service. Eleven years of scholarships. And a legacy that continues to invest in the next generation of Girl Scouts.
100 years. Countless stories. One lasting legacy.
